PENINSULA CO-OP, Vancouver Island

The 2017 Hall of Fame award was presented to an organization that has been giving back to the communities where they do business since 1977.

Peninsula Co-op is a Vancouver Island based co-operative who’s core businesses include grocery, petroleum and convenience stores. With 17 gas locations, a grocery store, six local network cardlocks and two home heating divisions on Vancouver Island, they employ over 320 part and full-time employees. Peninsula Co-op is entirely locally owned and proudly share their profits with their member-owners, their community and their staff, which has been a part of Peninsula Co-op’s philanthropy since they opened their doors in 1977.

In December 2016, they gave back over $4.6 million to their member-owners through their annual rebate program. That amount doesn’t include the $370,000 Peninsula Co-op donated to over 220 local community groups, charities, capital projects, student scholarships and organizations through their Community Support Program.

Tom Humphreys, Petroleum Operations Manager, accepted the award on behalf of Peninsula Co-op.

It was an honour to recognize Tom Humphreys and the entire Peninsula Co-op team for their continuous dedication, leadership, and contribution to the convenience industry.

Jeannette Mandrusiak, Manager Retail, STÖR

Here in Alberta at the University of Calgary, Jeannette Mandrusiak has proven to be instrumental in helping the school’s c-store brand, STÖR, rise above the tide line of customer demand.

A native of Two Hills, Alberta where she grew up on a heritage farm in Peace River country, Jeannette has been the University’s retail operations manager for the past eight years. In this role she oversees STÖR as well as Bound & Copied and La Taqueria Prior to this she worked on event management, student government and other high profile positions at the University of Calgary before taking on her current role. When you want something done right, look to a busy person to get it done. So, when the university wanted to improve its retail operations they knew just where to look.

And, when Jeannette sought to get operations moving she knew where to look as well. For the past six years, she has been a regular attendee at The Convenience U CARWACS Show where she reports she has taken what she has learned back to her organization where she has spearheaded impactful change. She tells us that since undertaking a complete renovation of STÖR to enhance both the physical layout and the selection, the site has shown sales increases year over year, with last year being the most profitable in STÖR’s history.

She reports that they asked customers what they wanted and delivered. Jeannette partnered with an on-campus business to provide a broad selection in their upgraded foodservice sections and then watched as sales climbed exponentially. STÖR addresses needs from gluten-free to halal to vegan, and their student customers have shown their appreciation.

She has listened to industry leaders, taken the time to investigate the challenges and sought positive solutions. She has then enacted a program from what she has learned and created a retail setting that is emblematic of industry best practice.

It was an honour to recognize Jeannette Mandrusiak for her continuous dedication, leadership, and contribution to the convenience industry.
